Preserving Legacy: Digitizing Chi Phi Fraternity’s Archives
In the ever-evolving landscape of technological advancements, the preservation of historical artifacts has taken on a new form: digitization. Chi Phi National, the Educational Trust, and dedicated Brothers recognizing the importance of safeguarding our rich history, almost 200 years old, have embarked on a transformative journey to digitize our archival items. Together, we have partnered with the expert team from HistoryIT on this project that not only preserves the past but also paves the way for future generations to connect with the legacy of our Brotherhood.
On March 26, 2024, the Educational Trust hosted a webinar, as part of the Founding Principle Series, with Kristen Gwinn-Becker, PhD, Founder and CEO of HistoryIT, to give an informative update on the progress of this incredible project. The process of digitization involves converting physical documents, photographs, and other artifacts into digital format. This meticulous undertaking requires careful planning, execution, and expertise. As attendees discovered, the digitization project encompasses various phases, each crucial in its own right.
The digitization project extends beyond preservation—it’s an investment in accessibility and engagement. As Gwinn-Becker explained, ‘History is important and history is in danger.’ The preservation of our identity and legacy is instrumental for these very reasons. As an organization with a storied history spanning two centuries, Chi Phi cherishes its traditions and values. By digitizing its archives, the Fraternity and the Educational Trust ensure that these legacies endure, not confined to dusty shelves but accessible to all who seek to understand and uphold them.
Moreover, digitization fosters connectivity across generations. Alumni can revisit their collegiate years through digitized yearbooks and memorabilia, bridging the gap between past and present. New members, too, gain a deeper appreciation for Chi Phi’s heritage, forging stronger bonds with the organization and its values.
The digitization project of Chi Phi Fraternity’s archives is more than a technical endeavor—it’s a testament to the enduring significance of history. It honors the past, empowers the present, and enriches the future. We invite you to watch the recorded webinar by following clicking here.
